Biography:

Robert "Robbie" Walter Wheeler, 62, of Keytesville, MO, died Monday, April 9, 2018, at University Hospital in Columbia.  Robert was born April 2, 1956, the son of James Julian and Janet "Jerry" (Esau) Wheeler.

Robert was a graduate of the Keytesville High School Class of 1974.  He attended Missouri Boys State. He attended the University of Kansas, 1974-1975, School of Architecture and Urban Design, and attended the University of Missouri-Columbia, 1975-1978, receiving a B.A.  in Political Science. He spent a semester working with Missouri Farm Bureau's lobbyist, and was a member of College Democrats. Robbie continued his education at the University of Missouri-Columbia from 1981-1984, earning a J.D. from the School of Law.  In 1988 Robbie received a Diploma in Advanced International Studies from the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law, studying in Austria and Switzerland. In 1997 he attended Self-Employment Training through Thomas Hill Enterprise Center. In addition to his formal education, Rob traveled extensively for a year between his undergraduate degree and law school, eventually circling the globe. During his travels he held jobs in several countries, met people of many cultures, economic means, and creeds, and developed the respect for all people which served him throughout his legal practice and his life. While in India he was approached by a small nun who saw his interactions with people there, and suggested he might stay in India and serve the poor. When he saw a photograph in the news later, he realized he had met Mother Teresa.

Since admission to the bar in 1984, Robbie has worked in a small-town general practice, serving the bars of the State of Missouri, the Eastern District Of Missouri Federal Court, and the Western District of Missouri.  Robbie served as Chariton County Prosecuting Attorney from November, 2003, through December, 2006, and from January, 2015 until the present. In addition to his legal practice, he was a partner with his father in a cow-calf operation on family farm land in the Keytesville area.

Robbie joined the Chariton County Democratic Committee in 1986, holding offices locally and statewide throughout the years.  He was active in his community, being past president of both Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce. Rob served as a board member of the Chariton County Community Foundation, Sterling Price Days, and Friends of Keytesville, and belonged to the Missouri Cattlemen's Association, Nature Conservancy, and Mizzou Alumni. Though he was currently serving on the house corporation for the Sigma Nu house at KU, Robert was a true Mizzou Tiger through and through.

Robbie is survived by his mother,Jerry Wheeler, of Kansas City, MO, and sister Linn Wheeler (Kurt) Gretzinger of Urich.  He was a loving uncle to his nephew Nathan (Cassie) Gretzinger and grandnieces/nephews India Jane Walker, Emmett Walker, Eleanor Jane and James Julian of Kansas City, and his niece Betsy Gretzinger (Chris) Vida and grandnephews Kurt and Elliott of Kansas City.  He was preceded in death by his father..
