Service Information: Mass of Christian Burial is 11:30 a.m., Saturday, September 29, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salisbury with burial in St. Raphael Cemetery in Indian Grove, MO.
Contributions: In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the St. Raphael Cemetery Association.

Biography:

Mary Mercedes (Koehl) Gladbach, 103, died Tuesday, September 25, 2018, with family at her side.  Mercedes was born August 13, 1915 in rural Mendon, MO the daughter of Francis Xavier and Anna Regina (Vater) Koehl.  She married Gilbert Raphael Gladbach on April 26, 1949 and he preceded her in death on January 24, 1971.

Mercedes had many hobbies including cooking, baking, sewing, cross stitch, embroidery and love of flowers.  Her family and friends were always curious to see what the counted cross stitch Christmas ornament would be each year.  She was an avid Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs fan.    

Mercedes was a graduate of Mendon High School, Class of 1934.  Mrs. Gladbach received her BS degree in education from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (now Truman State) in Kirksville, MO.  She taught elementary school in rural Chariton County and Keytesville R-III School for over 50 years.   

While she was able, she was visible at open houses, award banquets, pep assemblies, organizational inductions, proms, dances and other conference activities. Mercedes was passionate about Keytesville Tiger Basketball She was well respected by students and faculty.  Her life was educating and education.

Her professional activities included being a member of NRTA, a member of MRTA for 38 years, serving on the state legislative board, as Region 5 vice president for eight years, and as Region 5 community service person.  She enjoyed visiting the capitol to talk with legislators.

She served on the MRTA Foundation Board.   She attended MRTA state meetings for 31 consecutive years and was a former president of the Northeast Missouri Retired Teachers.

She was a member of the Randolph County unit RTA, organized a new Carroll County Unit RTA, and is a 38-year member of the Chariton County Unit RTA, serving as president, secretary, and treasurer, legislative, and membership committees.

She was a MSTA member for 55 years, member of the Keytesville Community Teachers Association for 26 years serving as president, secretary, and treasurer, and a past member of the American Association of University Women. 

Mercedes was also active, with the Chartion county Sheltered Workshop Senate Bill 40 Board, Chariton County Democratic Central Committee serving as secretary for several years, Keytesville Township, and prepared and served food for the Keytesville R-III Tournament Hospitality room.

She was an honorary member of the Keytesville R-III Future Farmers of America and Family Career and Community Leaders of America chapters.  She is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Altar Sodality of Salisbury, Legion of Mary. She volunteered for the meals on wheels, food bank and Community Center Board.

Mercedes is survived by two daughters Marie Elizabeth (Terry) Dolan of Trenton, MO, Margaret Frances Gladbach of Columbia, MO, brother Francis Norbert  Koehl of Prairie Du Sac, WI, two step grandchildren Douglas (Stephanie) Dolan and Shari (Tim) Viox, four step great grandchildren, and two great great grandsons, sister in law Margaret Koehl of Mendon, MO, several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephew.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Joseph Eugene "Gene" Koehl, sisters Bernadine Elizabeth Feiner, Loretta Margaret Feiner, and Monica Marie Maag .
